The good old bulbs / fluorescent
We will not go into the technical features of each type of lamp – we are only interested in how they affect nature and health.
In this category, aging incandescent bulbs will be the undisputed exterior. Firstly, it is difficult and expensive to dispose of them properly, and secondly, the energy efficiency is very low. Only 4-5% of the energy consumed goes directly to lighting. The remaining 95-96% is spent on heating the tungsten filament. The United States has always drawn attention to this and does not produce incandescent bulbs, although importing them into the country is not prohibited. Our demand for old “Ilyich bulbs” has decreased significantly in favor of more energy efficient bulbs. The only reason people still buy it is the low price.

Halogen bulbs are harmful to the environment, too. The bromine fumes that fill the flasks destroy the ozone layer. Getting rid of these bulbs is a long, expensive and unrealistic process to implement everywhere. Therefore, since 2018, it has been banned in the European Union countries.
Next in the line are fluorescent lamps. Despite the fact that it is more technologically complex and more expensive than the previous types, it is also imperfect in terms of compatibility with the environment. The lamps of these lamps contain mercury vapor. There are fewer of them in the same home thermometer, but a broken bulb is dangerous, too. In many countries of the world, including Russia, it is forbidden to use small fluorescent lamps with a mercury content in vials of more than 5 mg. These products now on store shelves contain 3-5 mg of mercury. This is an acceptable standard, but nevertheless, if the flask is damaged, the room will have to be ventilated for a long time and treated with manganese solution. The elimination of fluorescent lamps is better developed than halogen lamps. All major cities in Russia have reception points for used light sources. Environmental cars – mobile recycling stations – are coming to small towns and villages.
The most environmentally friendly LED lights are free from mercury and other toxic gases. Instead of gas flasks, LEDs are installed in them – complex semiconductor devices that convert electric current into light radiation. In terms of rational energy consumption, LED lamps are also in the lead. These light sources belong to energy efficiency class “A”, which is the highest generally accepted class. And LED lights are also very durable, unlike other types. One product resource is enough for 100 thousand hours of operation, that is, about 15 years of operation. Therefore, LED light sources are much less recycled.
This aspect is inseparable from the environmental aspect, because we do not live in a vacuum and environmental pollution will affect our health, if not now, then later. But in order to make the most objective comparison possible, consider how different types of lamps can harm us here and now.
Fluorescent bulbs are considered the most dangerous to health. In no case do not allow them to break, and do not throw them into trash bins or outside. We have already talked about mercury, since its fumes are extremely dangerous not only for the environment, but also for humans. Don’t forget to take your used bulbs to collection points.
The second danger of these bulbs is the invisible pulsation that damages eyesight and reduces performance. Many have noticed that in a room lit by fluorescent lamps there is a feeling of inexplicable fatigue.
The only disadvantage of halogen lamps, except for pollution of the environment with bromine fumes, is that during operation, their surface warms up a lot, which leads to an increase in the overall temperature. This is not necessary for rooms with good ventilation. The same drawback is observed with incandescent bulbs.
The hygienic safety of LEDs is the most controversial at the moment. In some articles you can read that they are completely harmless, and in others they are attributed to non-existent defects such as a burn of the retina (we have little idea how to look at the lamp for this to happen). The truth is in the middle. The health effect of LED lamps directly depends on their quality. Good products have low waviness and low radiation intensity in the blue and blue spectrums, which are most harmful to vision. LED lamp quality directly depends on the voltage to light converter unit. Low-quality products have the cheapest units that are not able to provide the required waviness ratio. Therefore, purchasing LED lights at halogen price is not the best solution.
